Es la bacteria responsable de la mayoría de casos de úlceras duodenales y estomacales, así como muchos de los casos de gastritis crónica. Helicobacter pylori es una bacteria productora de ureasa. Esta enzima degrada la urea, liberando CO2, que es eliminado por la espiración.

Al iniciar la prueba, se ingiere un comprimido que contiene urea marcada con un Isótopo natural NO-radiactivo del Carbono, el Carbono-13. Como resultado de la toma de este comprimido, de hallarse H. pylori presente en el aparato digestivo, se liberará a los pocos minutos CO2 marcado con Carbono-13.
Al comparar los niveles basales de eliminación de CO2 en el aire espirado, con el que se mide después de haber ingerido la urea marcada, se detectará (en caso de infección) un incremento significativo. Esto revelará la presencia de Helicobacter Pylori.
Al tratarse de un producto inocuo, con un marcador NO-radiactivo, la prueba puede realizarse siempre que convenga, e incluso repetirse en caso necesario.
El test resulta especialmente útil para confirmar la erradicación de la bacteria, una vez completado el tratamiento antibiótico.
Precauciones:
La prueba requiere un ayuno estricto en las 8h. previas (ni sólidos, ni líquidos) antes de venir al laboratorio de análisis.
Con el fin de evitar falsos negativos de la prueba, esta no puede realizarse después de un tratamiento antibiótico, ni después de la toma de antiácidos. Si esta tomando alguno de estos fármacos, consulte con su médico antes de la realización del test.

Las recomendaciones para la realización del Test de aliento para la detección del Helicobacter Pylori son:
Mínimo 6 horas de ayuno
No fumar
No lavarse los dientes
No beber agua
No ponerse protección labial
No tomar medicamentos tipo protector gástrico o antibióticos durante 10 a 15 días a ser posible.
